Where Is 5G Available in the UK? (Updated for 2022)

UK 5G rollout kicks off in 2020

The UK is one of many countries with 5G access. Depending on the provider, UK mobile subscribers can now get 5G in key areas.

5G is a huge leap forward over 4G when it comes to speed and latency, so it’s a big step forward for vehicle communications, smart cities, mobile communications, VR and AR etc. It will improve many areas of our lives.

Several companies have already rolled out 5G in the UK, but not in every city. Providers are rolling out the new network in the UK during 2022.

5G Challenges: Why Not Implemented Faster?

In addition to the aforementioned companies that are actively testing and implementing 5G networks, there is also the 5G/6G Innovation Center at the University of Surrey in Guildford, Surrey, England.

It is a test bed where researchers and partners can test and develop any technology capable of working on the next generation wireless network in a real environment. Its purpose is to test 5G and 6G indoors and outdoors, in urban and rural locations where coverage may be difficult, and where a mobile network has not yet been established.

CityFibre and Arqiva announced details about the country’s largest small-cell 5G pilot test in London’s Hammersmith and Fulham boroughs in December 2018. The companies built a 15km high-density fiber network that provides bandwidth for mobile network operators to take advantage of 5G.
