What Is a 7Z File?

How to open, edit and convert 7Z files

A file with the 7Z file extension is a 7-Zip compressed file. It’s actually like a folder on your computer, except it works like a file.

Both a folder and a 7Z file can store one or more files and even other folders. However, unlike folders, this is a single file with the .7Z extension that serves as a compressed archive of data.

When you download packaged files from the Internet, such as computer software programs, photo albums, document collections, you’ll probably only see one… basically anything that could be better downloaded in a smaller, compressed form.

Some 7Z files are split into smaller chunks for easy loading or storage. They end up with a different file extension, such as .7Z.001.

How to open 7Z file

They can be opened with a growing number of zip/unzip programs, but the free 7-Zip tool created by the format’s creators is probably the best on Windows. It allows you not only to extract (open) but also to create your own 7Z files.

p7zip is the command line version of 7-Zip for Linux.

PeaZip is another favorite that supports extraction and compression to the 7Z format on Windows and Linux.

for macOS; Keka or The Unarchiver, both free, are two great alternatives for extracting files from one. Commander Another option.

Sometimes, even after installing a file extraction program, simply double-clicking it will not open the file. A quick and simple solution is to right-click the file and choose to unzip it.

In 7-Zip this can be done via: 7-zip > open filewhich will open the 7Z file 7-Zip file manager.

7-Zip context menu options

If you want to pre-select a program that will always open 7Z files when you double-click them, check out our guide on How to Change File Associations in Windows. Although this allows you to modify the program automatically It opens 7Z files, you can always use a different tool by opening the other file extractor and then loading the file from there.

There are also many free 7Z file openers online that don’t require you to download any software and work on any operating system with a modern browser. They work by having you upload them to the website for the extraction process where you can download the files one by one.

ezyZip, B1 Online Archive, and Unzip-Online are some free online 7Z file openers.

If you need to open one on a mobile device, free apps like iZip (iOS) and 7Zipper (Android) should work.

How to open 7Z track files

Have multiple 7Z files that need to be opened together? If it’s split into different parts, you have to combine them in a very special way to make the original file that you can extract normally.

For example, maybe a part 1.7z, part 2.7z, part 3.7zetc. This can be confusing because if you only open one, you will most likely find another file named. something.001and this pattern continues with each of the other 7Z files.

This can be a bit confusing to understand if you’ve never dealt with multi-part 7Z files, so we recommend reading these steps on the Nexus Wiki for some image instructions on how to combine them to finally get the content stored in those sections. .

The instructions on the Nexus Wiki are for opening something specific, so the filenames won’t be the same as your files, but you can still use the steps to open anything similar that has multiple 7Z parts. These instructions also apply to 7-Zip only.

How to convert 7Z file

Note that the 7Z file looks like a folder containing one or more files. This means you cannot convert one to PDF, DOCX, JPG or any other format like that. Tasks like this require first extracting the files from the archive and then converting them individually with a different file converter.

Other file formats you can convert instead are just ZIP, RAR, ISO etc. other file formats.

The easiest and fastest way to convert small 7Z is to use an online service. Zamzar is especially one that can convert one to many other file formats like ZIP, TAR, LZH, and CAB.

Two other examples are CloudConvert and other formats like Convert Files and TGZ, which are websites that can convert 7Z to RAR for free in your browser. Like Zamzar, reserve these sites for smaller 7Z files, as you must upload the entire file to the site before converting it and then download it to save.

Check out these Free File Converters for Occasionally Used Formats for some other sites that can convert one.

If yours is large or you want to convert the 7Z to ISO, it’s probably best to use a special “offline” zip/unzip program like IZArc, TUGZip or Filzip.

More information about 7Z files

7Z is an open file format under the GNU Lesser General Public License.

The 7Z file format was first released in 1999. It supports file sizes up to 16 billion GB.

The format does not store file system permissions. This means you cannot set permissions on files, store them in a 7Z archive, and expect the same permissions to be preserved when extracting them.

7Z files can use 256-bit AES encryption to prevent them from being opened unless the password is known.

The 7-Zip program lets you choose five different compression levels when creating a new archive. Fastest for Ultra. even you can choose Shopping centre If you choose not to compress, this will be faster to create and extract files later, but it also takes up more storage space.

If you choose a compression level, you can choose from a variety of compression methods, including LZMA2, LZMA, PPMd, and BZip2. When using 7-Zip to create a 7Z archive, some other options include choosing a different dictionary size, word size, strict block size, number of CPU threads, and more.

Once a 7Z archive is created, you can add new files to it by dragging the files into the folder while it’s open in 7-Zip (and possibly other file compression programs).
