The Batman Is The Perfect Version of Nolan’s Dark Knight Hero Line

However, the film’s final scene sees Batman get to work in helping lead rescue operations for those affected by the flooding. This shows that Pattinson will be the hero Gotham needs, even if he can’t be the one it deserves, as he couldn’t save the city, but he’ll still help it. While this may not be as dramatic as Bale’s Batman taking the blame for murders he didn’t commit, it’s a personification of the ideal presented by The Dark Knight‘s ending: Riddler’s plan in The Batman succeeds, and Gotham isn’t saved. However, Batman is still willing to do the work necessary to help the people of the city.

Perhaps what’s most important is the way that Pattinson’s Batman learns from Riddler’s plan. The villain was able to inspire others by setting a radical example, and this inspires Batman to become a symbol of hope instead of a symbol of fear. The Riddler’s plan was to use the corruption in Gotham to shake the city to its very core, but in doing so he also inspires Batman to become less of a vigilante and more of a hero. Even if Gotham doesn’t deserve saving, Batman tries regardless just because the city needs him. Making this distinction central to Batman and Riddler’s story allows the film to perfectly pay off the iconic line from the Dark Knight trilogy.

The Batman capitalizing on The Dark Knight‘s hero line is made even sweeter by the way The Dark Knight Rises failed to do so. In the final film in the Dark Knight trilogy, Bruce Wayne has all but stopped his vigilante work after the events of The Dark Knight, and the film ultimately sees him walk away from his role as Gotham’s protector. This makes the way in which The Batman delivers on the “hero Gotham needs” line even better, as it finally pays off on the promise of a Batman that will do whatever is necessary to help Gotham.
