Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Confirms Disney Has A Blue Lightsaber Problem

With how many new heroes and villains are being introduced in the Star Wars universe, it would be best for Disney to give them different-colored lightsabers other than blue to make them all more distinct. Jedi: Fallen Order confirmed all of the canonical lightsaber colors when Cal builds his own in the planet Ilum, so Disney should use this spectrum to its advantage and make more characters with unique lightsaber colors. While blue is the classic, traditional color to use, it would be cool to see Jedi wielding colors that haven’t yet been featured, like orange and pink.

Jedi: Fallen Order‘s Cal Kestis could be crossing over with Kenobi, or the other way around, with Obi-Wan Kenobi showing up in Jedi: Survivor. That being said, having two wielders of blue lightsabers fight at the same time would be too derivative and boring. Cal should have a saber color unique to his own personality, like orange, that would allow the audience to recognize him easier in future crossovers. Cal is a fairly important character during the Order 66 era of Star Wars canon, so it would make sense for him to show up in future works. Giving him a lightsaber with a unique and distinct color other than blue would also establish him as a more iconic Star Wars hero.

Many Other Star Wars Heroes Before Cal Have Wielded A Blue Lightsaber

While there is nothing inherently wrong with blue lightsabers, they are arguably the most used weapons in the Star Wars franchise. From Leia in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker to Rebels‘ Kanan Jarrus to even Legends characters like Starkiller, the blue lightsaber has been fairly overused. It would be a nice change to see Cal wield some other color and allow for more lightsaber diversity in the Star Wars universe.

With the creation of the the new High Republic, many different Star Wars lightsaber wielders and colors have been confirmed to exist in canon. Despite this, however, Cal continues to use a blue lightsaber. Having Cal use some other colors would be a nice nod to the High Republic and be one step closer to an adaptation of that era in the timeline. There are plenty of lightsaber colors to choose from, as seen in Jedi: Fallen Order, and Cal would look great using any one of them.

Cal Kestis’ Original Lightsaber In Jedi: Fallen Order Was His Master’s

The original lightsaber Cal Kestis uses throughout most of Jedi: Fallen Order is his master’s, Jaro Tapal. It would make more sense for his lightsaber color to be different now that he is using the one he crafted himself in Ilum. In Jedi: Fallen Order, the player is able to choose the color of Cal’s lightsaber, even allowing them to customize the hilt and grip of the weapon as well. Cal using a different lightsaber color other than blue could signify a fresh start for the hero, allowing him to lead a life without being clouded by his guilt and trauma of Order 66.

An argument could be made that blue fits Cal’s personality and the kyber crystal canonically changes to blue to fit his character. While this may be true, from a writing perspective it would give more emphasis on Cal’s rise to becoming a Star Wars Jedi Knight if he fought with a lightsaber color that was not the same as his master’s. This could give a visual effect and symbolize him overcoming his trauma. Green would also be a good pick for Cal, as it symbolizes rebirth and healing and could be symbolic of his own healing from Order 66. Yellow might be a good color for Cal as well, since it symbolizes protection and was used by Jedi Sentinels. Cal could have been a Sentinel with a personality like his, being someone so keen on restoring the Order and protecting the Jedi.

With the release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor‘s first trailer, Disney seemingly confirmed Cal’s lightsaber to be canonically blue, which means Cal seems to join the ranks of characters like Jaro Tapal, Kanan, Depa Billaba, Leia, and Ahsoka. While this is likely disappointing for some, fans who wish for a different lightsaber color will just have to wait to change it in 2023 when Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releases.
