OnePlus Nord N20 5G is official — everything we know so far

Not happy to stand on its laurels after the launch of the OnePlus 10 Pro, OnePlus has announced a new phone for North America. OnePlus Nord N20, the sequel to the 2020 Nord N10, has become official. This new budget handset offers some of the features you normally see on flagships at a more affordable price.

Without further ado, here is everything you need to know about the OnePlus Nord N20.

OnePlus has announced that T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile will become exclusive carrier partners of the Nord N20. The phone will go on sale from both carriers on April 28.

You’ll be able to purchase the Nord N20 at a later, undisclosed date from retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and others. According to T-Mobile, you can buy a Nord N20 for $11.75 per month for 24 months, which is $282.

The OnePlus Nord N20 looks pretty impressive with two oversized camera lenses. The blue color is striking in photos and renders. The front of the phone also looks quite modern with a punch-hole front camera and flat screen. There’s a significant chin up, but it’s a budget phone after all.

As for the specs, with the Nord N20 you get:

The 6.43-inch AMOLED display will excite many people, but one of the things that excites us the most is the 33W fast charging. Other affordable phones like the iPhone SE (2022), Pixel 5a and Galaxy A53 charge at slower speeds than the Nord N20 – the fastest being the A53 at 25W. The Nord N20 should quickly top up its 4,500mAh battery.

We haven’t received a Snapdragon 695 phone for testing yet, so we’re definitely curious to see what this chip is capable of. This is an octa-core system-on-chip with a maximum frequency of 2.2 GHz and an X51 5G modem supporting sub-6 GHz and mmWave. You don’t have Wi-Fi 6 on this chip, so this is still a connection standard reserved for more expensive phones.

The OnePlus Nord N20 also has an in-display fingerprint sensor in addition to the clean look. This technology has evolved a lot over the past few years, but we’re still wondering how fast and accurate the Nord N20’s sensor will be. There is also a 64 MP main camera, monochrome lens and macro lens; There’s no OnePlus 10 Pro-style telephoto option here.

One of the worrying things we noticed is that OnePlus has said that the Nord N20 will ship with Android 11. If true, this is a gross omission. Android 12 is six months old, so we think it’s inexcusable for OnePlus to launch a phone with a year and a half of OS by 2022.

The OnePlus Nord N20 looks pretty good on paper and in photos, especially at $282. We are particularly concerned about Android 11, as the Nord N series has not received many updates during its lifetime.

Still, the Nord N20 looks like it will offer a premium look and some decent specs. We wonder how the Nord N20 will compare to last year’s $239 OnePlus Nord N200, the Nord N20 being this year’s budget OnePlus phone.

The OnePlus Nord N20 looks pretty nice on paper and in photos, especially for $282. We’re worried about the Android 11 thing, especially since the Nord N series doesn’t get that many updates across its lifespan.
