How to Use the Oculus Quest Microphone

Your Quest has a built-in microphone for in-game communication

This article explains how to use the Oculus Quest microphone, including instructions on what to do if the Quest microphone is not working. Instructions pertain to both the Oculus Quest and Quest 2.

How does the Oculus Quest microphone work?

Every Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 device includes an array of built-in microphones along with built-in speakers. These headphones are completely self-contained units that you can use without a computer or any other additional equipment or accessories, so the bottom has a microphone array close to your mouth. The microphone array should pick up your voice and transmit it when you’re in a voice chat unless you mute it.

Oculus Quest voice chat has two different levels. Both Quest and Quest 2 include system-wide chat, allowing you to chat with your friends whether you’re in the game or not. Additionally, app and game developers can rely on system-wide chat, offer their own in-game voice chat solutions, or support both. If people can’t hear you or you can’t hear them, it’s usually due to an issue with in-game voice chat or system-wide chat.

Also, problems may occur when connecting Quest to a PC with a connecting cable. Any microphone plugged into or built into your computer can replace the Oculus Quest microphone, and the same goes for speakers or headphones built in or plugged in. Therefore, when using the connecting cable, you should check your computer and set the audio input to use your Quest microphone.
