Alexa is Amazon’s virtual assistant that can provide news and weather reports, retrieve sports scores, map routes and perform many other functions. It’s mostly used at home, but there are multiple ways to get Amazon Alexa in your car.

Requires Alexa internet connection. In your car, this means your phone must use a cellular data connection. Asking simple questions won’t use a lot of data, but using Alexa to stream music can quickly consume your bandwidth unless you have an unlimited plan.

Six Ways to Bring Alexa to Your Car

There are six main ways to put Alexa in a car, and each has its own pros and cons. While the Amazon Echo Auto is an option, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Here are six ways to get Alexa in your car:

  • Amazon Echo Auto: This is the simplest way to get Alexa in your car, especially if you’re already familiar with other Echo devices. Amazon Echo Auto is essentially an Echo or Dot specifically designed for use in automotive applications. It uses your phone’s internet connection and also requires you to install the Alexa app on your phone.
  • Original equipment infotainment centers: This is the easiest way to use Alexa in a car because it comes with the infotainment center built in. Some vehicles even have built-in cellular data connections for Alexa to access. The problem is, you need to buy a tool with Alexa to take advantage of this app.
  • Alexa-enabled navigation devices: Some navigation devices, such as Garmin Speak, have Alexa capabilities. They often work like a Bluetooth speaker with a screen for displaying navigation instructions. These devices rely on your phone’s cellular data connection and require you to install a special app.
  • Alexa-enabled smart speakers: These are Bluetooth speakers with built-in Alexa functionality. If it supports Bluetooth, they usually connect to your phone to access cellular data and your car’s audio system. Some are battery powered and others plug into a 12V outlet.
  • Use an echo point: If you already have an Echo Dot, why not use Alexa as a test to see if you want it in your car? Plug it into your phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot and plug it into the 12V USB adapter and you’re ready.
  • use your smartphone: This is the simplest solution, but far from the most elegant. You can use Alexa in your car via the Alexa app, but there is no speaker option. You can ask your Google Assistant to open the Alexa app, but you have to physically tap the bell icon in the Alexa app to communicate with Alexa.

Amazon Echo Auto

Amazon Echo Auto is essentially an extension of the Echo product line designed specifically for use in cars. It connects to your phone for internet access because Echo devices cannot process speech and receive no response without an internet connection.

As the Echo Auto is designed for use in cars, it comes with a 12V USB adapter and can be connected to the car’s audio system via Bluetooth or a wired auxiliary connection. For more on how this works, check out our complete Amazon Echo Auto guide.

Using Alexa in Factory Infotainment Systems

If you’re in the market for a new tool and you’re a fan of Alexa, there are a number of tools that have Alexa built in. Rather than adding additional hardware, Alexa is accessed through the interface you use for the radio, navigation, hands-free calling, and everything in between.

The benefit of this type of Alexa integration is that it is extremely easy to use. Nothing extra to buy or install, all you have to do is ask Alexa questions as if you were at home.

The downside of this app is that it’s not available on most vehicles, and it’s probably not a feature that will lead many people to buy a vehicle they may not be interested in.

How to get Alexa in your car with Alexa-enabled devices

There are many Alexa-enabled devices that let you put Alexa in your car when you’re away from Echo Auto. These devices fall into two broad categories, Alexa-enabled navigation devices and Alexa-enabled Bluetooth speakers, but you use them more or less the same way.

You can also use an Echo Dot with the same method, but you will need to find a 12V USB adapter to power it.

Install the Alexa app on your phone.

  • iOS: Alexa on App Store
  • android: Alexa on Google Play

Set up Alexa on your phone.

If your Alexa-enabled device has a proprietary app, install and configure it.

Some devices only use the Alexa app and others require an additional app. For example, the Garmin Speak navigation device with Alexa requires the Garmin Drive app (iOS, Android)

Plug your Alexa-enabled device into your vehicle. This may include mounting it on a dash or windshield, placing it in a cup holder, or another safe location.

If necessary, connect your Alexa-enabled device to your vehicle’s electrical system via the cigarette lighter or 12V accessory socket.

Some Alexa-enabled devices are battery powered. Others, like the Echo Dot, require you to purchase a separate 12V USB adapter.

Turn on the device and connect it to your Alexa app. If necessary, enable your phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot or enable your hotspot device to provide an Internet connection.

Connect your Alexa-enabled device to your car’s audio system via Bluetooth or, if available, a wired auxiliary connection.

If your headunit doesn’t have Bluetooth or an auxiliary input, you’ll need to choose a standalone Alexa-enabled speaker like the Dot. If you go this route, you will need to manually mute your car audio system while listening to music or making calls via your Alexa device.

You are now ready to access Alexa in your vehicle using voice commands.

Using Alexa in your car with just one phone

The final way to use Alexa in the car is to simply use the Alexa app without any additional devices. This provides access to the same information, but less useful and also less secure.

The problem is that while Alexa-enabled devices will take advantage of your phone and require the Alexa app to be installed, they allow you to do everything hands-free. Without an external device like the Garmin Speak or an Alexa-enabled speaker like the Rova Viva, there’s no way to use the Alexa app hands-free.

If you want to use Alexa in your car with just your phone, instead of saying your wake word (“Alexa”, “Amazon”, “Computer”, “Echo” or “) you need to launch the app and tap the bell icon. Zig”). Tapping the bell icon lets you give voice commands or ask questions, and Alexa responds. However, tapping this little icon while driving isn’t particularly easy or safe.
