How to Format PDF Properly Before Converting PDF to ePub

The first step in creating an ebook is to create a PDF file. Almost any document can be converted to PDF format. Most PDF files are created in a word processor such as Microsoft Word.

The trick to creating a PDF file that converts to ePub correctly is to structure the pages so they can be read by an e-reader and use the word processor’s built-in formatting styles. Here are some tips:

  • Use styles to format headings, indented paragraphs, numbered lists, and bulleted lists.
  • Use page breaks when you want a page to deliberately stop at a certain point (for example, at the end of each section).
  • Select an 8.5” x 11” page size with portrait orientation and 0.5 inch margins.
  • Align paragraphs left or center.
  • Use a single font for text. Recommended fonts are Ariel, Times New Roman, and Courier.
  • Use a font size of 12 points for body text and 14 to 18 points for headings.
  • Create images in JPEG or PNG format with a maximum height of 600 pixels and a width of 550 pixels. Pictures must be in RGB color mode and 72 DPI.
  • Do not wrap text around images. Use inline images where the text is above and below the image.

If you are using Microsoft Word, File > Export To create a PDF file from a Word document.
