How to charge your Nintendo Switch

Charge Joy-Cons while connected to the switch

The easiest way to charge Joy-Cons is to connect them to your Nintendo Switch. You can also use the dock or AC adapter that came with your gaming unit to charge the Switch and controllers. Slide your Joy-Cons sideways until they click. Then use one of the options below.

Use the Nintendo Switch Charging Dock

The dock that comes with your Nintendo Switch provides an easy way to keep everything charged. And if you’re not gaming, it’s ideal to keep the unit on this charger so it’s ready to go when you are.

Make sure the docking station is plugged into an outlet using the AC adapter, your Joy-Cons are plugged into the switch, then place the unit in the docking station.

You will see the battery level briefly in green in the upper left corner of the Switch screen. You should also see a green light near the lower left of the front of the pier.

If you are using portable mode, you can charge the unit and Joy-Cons without the dock. Plug the USB plug of the AC adapter into the USB port on the bottom of the Switch. Then plug the adapter into an outlet.

Charge Joy-Cons with a charging handle

The strap that came with your Nintendo Switch does not offer charging capability. But you can invest in the charging stand sold by Nintendo and other third-party retailers.

Slide your Joy-Cons along the sides of the handle, just as you slide on the Switch. Use the USB connector or AC adapter to charge the strap according to the accessory manufacturer’s instructions.

Depending on the charging stand you purchased, you may see a charging indicator that lights up when the Joy-Cons are charging or fully charged.

The nice thing about the charging handle is that you can continue playing when the Joy-Cons are charged.

Charge Joy-Cons with the Joy-Con Charging Dock

Besides the charging handle, you can purchase a charging base specifically for Joy-Cons from Nintendo or a third-party vendor. The great thing about this accessory is that you can carry multiple sets of Joy-Cons at the same time. You can also find one that can connect a pair of Joy-Cons and Pro Controllers.

Slide your Joy-Cons into the slot and connect the charger with the USB cable or power supply according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Depending on what you buy, you may see light indicators for charging and full charging.

Check Joy-Con controller battery levels

If you’re worried that your Joy-Cons’ battery is low, check your levels on Nintendo Switch.

What’s great about this accessory is that you can charge more than one set of Joy-Cons simultaneously. You can also find one that can power up a pair of Joy-Cons and the Pro Controller.

Slide your Joy-Cons into the dock and connect the charger via USB cable or power source per the manufacturer’s instructions. Depending on the one you purchase, you may see light indicators for charging and fully charged.

When the Joy-Cons are charged, slide them back into the Nintendo Switch.

Check the Joy-Con Controller Battery Levels

If you’re concerned that your Joy-Cons may be running low on battery, you can check their levels on your Nintendo Switch.

On the Home screen of your Switch, tap or navigate to and select Controllers.

On the left side, you’ll see the battery levels for each Joy-Con on the unit’s left and right. (You’ll also see the battery level for the Switch in the center.) So if those levels are getting low, you might want to give them a charge.
