Facebook Watch: What It Is and How to Use It

Facebook Watch is a video-on-demand service that combines the features of Facebook’s video sharing functionality with premium content. It allows creators to upload their own short and long videos, but also includes original comedy, drama and news programs. The service is free, but requires a Facebook account.

What is Facebook Watch?

Facebook Watch is built into Facebook, accessible on mobile platforms and streaming devices via Facebook’s main website and Facebook app. It can be found in its own Watch tab, which is similar to the Marketplace and Messenger tabs.

Facebook Watch is not a cable replacement service. It’s more like YouTube than YouTube TV in that it doesn’t include live television from cable networks or channels. Also, Instagram has a lot in common with Instagram TV, its entry into the user-generated content space dominated by YouTube.

Facebook Watch includes a mix of user content that Facebook pays to produce, and professionally produced content. It’s very similar to YouTube Premium with regular YouTube videos and exclusive original programming, but Facebook Watch is free.

How to watch Facebook Watch content

Facebook Watch is available on the website for desktop, smartphones and other devices like Amazon Fire TV and Xbox One.

You need a Facebook account to use Facebook Watch. You can technically go to a Facebook Watch show’s page and play the video without an account, but doing so will result in multiple pop-up messages asking you to subscribe to Facebook.

Unlike Messenger, which requires you to download an additional app, you can access Facebook Watch from the main Facebook app. The exception is Microsoft, which has a separate Facebook Watch app for Windows.

There are several ways to find videos when you open Facebook Watch:

  • Editor’s Picks: Some of Facebook Watch’s most popular videos are available via a large banner at the top of the Facebook Watch main site. choose arrow To toggle between these options, on the right side of the header
  • main options: Facebook Watch has an algorithm that tries to find videos you’re interested in based on your location, interests, hobbies, and videos you’ve watched in the past. The rest of Facebook Watch’s main site is populated with these automatically selected videos.
  • for search: Select face to face field and enter the name of the program you are looking for. For example, typing “My condolences” would feature the special Facebook Watch program of the same name.

  • facebook news: The News tab includes live and pre-recorded news videos from local and national sources. If you want to check out some fast news videos, this is the place to look.
  • Facebook Monitoring programs: This is where you’ll find the shows that make up most of the content on Facebook Watch. You can scroll through the editor’s options, browse through all the programs to see if there’s anything interesting, or search for something specific.
  • Games: This section is a bit more specialized as it represents Facebook’s alternative to Twitch and Youtube Gaming. This is the Facebook Watch section where you can find live game streams and pre-recorded videos from some of your favorite streamers.

Does Facebook Watch have ads or payment generators?

Facebook Watch offers two different ways for creators to monetize their videos: Audience Network and Ad Break. Both methods involve adding ads or short ads to videos. If you watch a video on Facebook Watch and the creator has monetized the video, you must watch ads during the video.

  • audience network: Intended for major publishers and app and game creators. It can be used to display ads from Facebook advertisers not only in videos, but also in apps, websites, Facebook Instant Articles and games.

  • Create professional looking videos: Not all Facebook Watch videos win Emmy awards, but they must be of higher production quality than the average YouTube videos.
  • Produce multiple videos: If you have a video series ready, Facebook Watch is more likely to include your videos.

Facebook Watch Groups

When you host a Facebook Watch Party, group members can watch the same video or the entire list of videos together. The video is synced so everyone can watch at the same time and you can also discuss what’s going on in real time by typing it into a chat area in the Facebook Watch window.

Facebook Watch Together

Similar to a Watch Party, Watch Together allows friends to watch Facebook videos via Messenger video chat and Facebook Messenger Rooms. This feature is available in the Messenger and Messenger Rooms mobile apps for iOS and Android.

To use Watch Together, start a Messenger video call or create a Messenger Room. Then swipe up to access the menu and watch together. Select a video from a category such as TV & Movies or Uploads. Facebook also offers suggestions based on your activities.

You can monitor up to eight people in a Messenger video call, while Messenger Rooms allow up to 50.
