Facebook Messenger: Everything You Need to Know

Text, call, share photos and videos, send money and play games

Messenger, an instant messaging service owned by Facebook, was launched in August 2011, replacing Facebook Chat. You can use Messenger without a Facebook account, so it can be used by people who haven’t signed up or closed their accounts. While the two are partially linked when you have a Facebook account, you don’t need to have one.

How to access Facebook Messenger

Messenger can be used with Facebook on your computer, on Messenger.com, or by accessing the mobile app on Android and iOS devices. Messenger works on Apple Watch just as it works on iPhones.

You can also install add-ons for some browsers for faster access to Messenger. These are not official Facebook apps. These are third-party extensions that non-Facebook developers release for free. For example, Firefox users can install the Facebook add-on for Messenger so they can dock Messenger next to their screen and use it in split-screen on other websites.

Leave Facebook forever? How to delete your account

Send text, images and videos

At its core, Messenger is a messaging app for individual and group messages, but it can also send pictures and videos. It also includes many built-in emojis, stickers and GIFs.

Some useful features available in Messenger are an indicator of when someone wrote, delivered receipts, read receipts, and a timestamp of when the message was sent, as well as an indicator of when the recipient last read the message.

Like Facebook, Messenger lets you react to messages on the website and in the app.

Another big advantage of sharing pictures and videos via Messenger is that the app and website collect all the media files so you can quickly browse through them.

If you are using Messenger with your Facebook account, all private messages from Facebook will appear here. You can delete these texts, archive them, and unarchive them to hide or show them from permanent view.

Facebook added the swipe feature to quickly archive chats in May 2021. You can also find your archived chats by going to: your profile > Archived chats.

Make an audio or video call

Messenger also supports audio and video calls from the mobile app, desktop version, and Facebook website. The phone icon is for voice calls and the camera icon is for face-to-face video calls. If you are using Messenger calling features on Wi-Fi, you can use the app or website to make free internet calls.

Transfering money

You can send money to people via Messenger using just your bank card information. You can do this on the website and mobile app.

To use it, join a chat, open the menu and Transfering money. You can choose to send or request money. Alternatively, you can message a price and select it to open the payment or request payment prompt. You can even add a small note to the transaction to remind you of its purpose.

Play a game

Messenger lets you play games within the app or across the website, even in a group message. You don’t need to download another app or visit another website to start playing with other Messenger users.

share your location

Instead of using a dedicated app to show someone where you are, you can let recipients track your location for up to an hour with the built-in location sharing feature of Messenger, which only works in the mobile app.

Facebook Messenger Features

While Messenger doesn’t have a calendar, it lets you create event reminders via the Reminders button in the mobile app. Another great way to do this is to send a message with a reference to a day and the app will automatically ask you if you want to be reminded. Like many other apps, Facebook Messenger has a dark mode.

The name of the group message and the nicknames of the contacts can be customized. The color theme of each conversation topic can also be changed.

Audio clips can be sent via Messenger if you want to send a message without having to text or make a full voice call. Instead of holding your finger on the microphone icon for hands-free use, you can play and record while you compose.

Notifications can be muted or turned off completely per conversation for a given hour, both for the desktop version of Messenger and via the mobile app.

Add new Messenger contacts by inviting contacts from your phone or Facebook friends if you’re on Facebook. There is also a special scan code that you can get from the app and share it with others who can scan your code and add it to Messenger instantly.

Another great thing about sharing images and videos through Messenger is that the app and website collect all the media files so you can quickly sift through them.

If you’re using Messenger with your Facebook account, any private Facebook message appears in it. You can delete these texts as well as archive and unarchive them to hide or unhide them from constant view.

Like many other apps, Facebook Messenger has a dark mode.

The name of a group message can be customized, as can the nickname of the people involved. The color theme of each conversation thread can be modified as well.

Audio clips can be sent through Messenger if you’d like to send a message without having to text or make a full audio call. You can even tap-and-record when creating it instead of holding your finger down on the mic icon if you want to go hands-free.

Notifications can be silenced on a per-conversation basis for a specified number of hours or completely turned off, both for the desktop version of Messenger and through the mobile app.

Add new Messenger contacts by inviting contacts from your phone or, if you’re on Facebook, your Facebook friends. There’s also a custom Scan Code you can grab from within the app and share with others, who can then scan your code to add you to their Messenger instantly.
