Best Elden Ring armor locations and sets

You can find the best Elden Ring armor locations scattered throughout the game. And it’s not always in a remote, hard-to-reach area – some can drop surprisingly early in the Elden Ring, and one of the entry-grade armor sets is up there with the best.

Of course it all depends on the type of building or playstyle you are using. There’s no point in looking for heavy armor and tanks if you want to play as a fast, ranged wizard. The ‘best’ will be different for everyone. However, whatever you plan on using it for, you’ll definitely want to spend some points on Endurance. This stat determines how much you carry, and almost anything worth using will need you to increase it a little. If it’s not high enough, you’ll do a ‘fat roll’ which is a slow dodge roll that makes you a heavy target and is something you really want to avoid. In general, all of the best armor sets are varying degrees of weight, so upgrading your ‘carrying supplies’ stat is crucial.

Whatever you’re looking for, though, we’ve found some of the best Elden Ring armor locations below, with a map and some descriptions to help you find them. As we mentioned, some neat things can be found very quickly, so here are the start and end scenarios. We can give a definite answer to the question.

While some armor in Elden Ring can be randomly dropped by certain enemies, most of the best armor sets are not, and we’ve reduced armor to help players who are feeling a little bare. What we’ve put above and below are some of the best armor locations considering the needs of various types of players. If these armor sets are purchased in the Basement of the Round Table, we’ve marked the location of the boss you need to kill to unlock them.

1. Exiled Knight Armor

A fairly common armor that is surprisingly one of the best in the game, despite being quite heavy. All pieces have a very low chance of falling from the Knights of Exile, the tall, powerful knights that roam the later areas of Stormveiled Castle (like the mimic veiled room).

2. Radahn Armor

Big size but also extremely heavy – definitely only for those with big stamina and equipment load. The helmet, arms, legs, and breastplate can be purchased separately from Runes for Enia in Roundtable Hold after defeating Starscourge Radahn at Castle Redmane. It also makes you look a bit like Ganondorf.

3. Furious Wolf Armor

It looks great, but also offers very good defense without being too heavy. Make two assassination contracts for Lady Tanith at Volcano Manor, then go hunting in Leyndell with her valet Bernahl. Along the way you’ll also get Scaled Armor, which is a handy replacement for Radahn’s armor and looks pretty cool.

4. Knight Armor

A heavy but solid midgame armor. Sold by Twin Husks in Roundtable Hold after defeating Godrick. If you’re struggling with this, we have a guide on how to beat Godrick in Elden Ring.

5. The Queen’s Crescent Crown

Part of the Queen’s kit, this helmet increases intelligence when worn. Defeat boss Rennala at Raya Lucaria Academy and buy him for Runes from Enia in Roundtable Hold.

6. Tramp Armor

Another heavy but solid option that isn’t organically available until the middle of the game. Vagabond starts with it or is sold by the trader in the center of the Giants Mountain Peaks, near the Ancient Snow Valley Ruins Place.

7. Scaled Armor

Lightweight but protective armor that works well in the early game. The Morne Castle Walls are sold by the merchant next to the Grace District.

8. Land of Reeds Samurai Armor

Good protection and surprisingly light. The samurai starts with it or is sold by the merchant in Northern Caelid, near the Lonely Merchant’s Blessing place.

9. The Great Helmet

Despite being just a helmet, this offers incredibly high defense and is worth the chase. Sold with the less notable Champion armor set by the merchant in Southern Caelid.

10. Crowns of Karolus and Olivinus Glintstone

If you don’t get the Queen’s Crescent Crown, these helmets increase your intelligence at the expense of Stamina or HP depending on what you use – a solid choice for Mages. Both found at Raya Lucaria Academy, both need detours to find the following:

  1. (a) olivuno Grace Schoolhouse is located south of the Classroom Site. Go left and press the bookcase to reveal a hidden balcony. Jump left, follow it and climb the rocks to find the crown on a corpse.
  2. (b) Carolus Right after the Grace Debate Hall, where you fight the Radagon’s Red Wolf boss. Go outside, then head to the northwest corner of the courtyard and follow the left path along the cliff edge to find a glowing crab in the bushes. Kill him for the Crown of Karolus.

While some armor in Elden Ring can be dropped randomly by specific enemies, most of the best armor sets aren’t, and we’ve narrowed down the armors that’ll help players who are feeling a bit naked. What we’ve put above and below are some of the best armor locations, taking into consideration the needs of multiple kinds of player. If these armor sets are bought back at the Roundtable Hold, we’ve instead marked the location of the boss you need to kill to unlock them.
1. Banished Knight armor
A rather common armor that is surprisingly some of the game’s best, though pretty heavy. All pieces have a very small chance to drop from Banished Knights, the tall, tough knights that can occasionally be found wandering the later areas of Stormveil Castle (such as the room with the mimic veil).
2. Radahn armor
Enormously high poise but also extremely heavy – definitely only for those with great Endurance and Equip Load. The helmet, arms, legs, and chest armor can all be bought separately from Enia for Runes at the Roundtable Hold after beating Starscourge Radahn at Redmane Castle. Also makes you look a bit like Ganondorf.
3. Raging Wolf armor
Looks cool, but also provides very good defense without being too heavy. Complete two assassination contracts for Lady Tanith at Volcano Manor and then go hunting with her goon Bernahl in Leyndell. You’ll also get the Scaled Armor along the way, which is a serviceable substitute for Radahn’s armor and looks quite cool.
4. Knight armor
A heavy, but solid mid-game armor. Sold by the Twin Husks at Roundtable Hold after beating Godrick. If you’re struggling with that, we’ve got a guide on how to beat Godrick in Elden Ring.

Part of the Queen’s set, this helmet boosts intelligence when worn. Beat the boss Rennala at Raya Lucaria Academy, then buy it from Enia at the Roundtable Hold for Runes.

7. Scale armor
Light but protective armor that works well in the early game. Sold by the merchant next to the Castle Morne Rampart Site of Grace.
8. Land of Reeds Samurai armor
Decent protection and surprisingly light. The Samurai starts with it, or it’s sold by the merchant in North Caelid, next to the Isolated Merchant’s Shack Site of Grace.
9. Greathelm
Though just a helmet, this provides incredibly high defense and is worth pursuing. Sold by the merchant in Southern Caelid along with the less remarkable Champion armor set.
10. Karolus and Olivinus Glintstone Crowns
If you can’t get the Queen’s Crescent Crown, these helmets boost your intelligence at the cost of either Stamina or HP, depending on which one you use – a very solid choice for Sorcerers. Both found in Raya Lucaria Academy, they both require detours to find:
(a) Olivunus is found South of the Schoolhouse Classroom Site of Grace. Head left and hit the bookshelf to reveal a hidden balcony. Jump down to the left, follow it around and climb up the rocks to find the crown on a corpse.
(b) Karolus is just after the Debate Parlour Site of Grace, where you fought the Red Wolf of Radagon boss. Head outside, then go to the Northwest corner of the courtyard and hug the left path along the cliff edge to find a glowing crab in the shrubbery. Kill it for the Karolus Crown.

Elden Ring builds

As for the rest, the best armor in Elden Ring will vary according to what kind of character build you’re making, but also what kind of enemy you’re going up against. Armor doesn’t just have a single protective stat, instead how much you’re protected varies depending on what hits you – some will resist magic attacks better, others will help you against physical strikes more. Can you upgrade armor at the Blacksmith?

No, armor cannot be upgraded or enhanced in Elden Ring, with the minor exception of altering garments at Sites of Grace, which slightly alters the stats of certain sets without necessarily improving them – usually it removes certain parts of the armor, such as capes, to reduced weight but it also lowers overall protection. Unlike weapons and armaments, Hewg and other blacksmiths will not upgrade your armor, no matter how many Elden Ring Smithing Stones you offer up – it’s up to you to simply find a better set.
