Batman: Arkham Is Hiding A Beloved Animated Series Hero

Jack Ryder is confirmed to be the Creeper by the time of Arkham Asylum, meaning his alternate identity has been more established by the time of Batman: Arkham City‘s storyline. This is worth noting because the Batman: Arkham series took an interesting direction with Ryder’s character by its second entry, as he becomes a more foolhardy, egocentric type in Arkham City. He has the courage to take risks in his journalism (hence why he ends up as a prisoner), but he later lies about his own heroism by saying he helped save Batman (even though Batman saves him several times throughout Arkham City). Ryder’s eccentricities feel in line with those of the Creeper, and it thus would have been nice to see Rocksteady develop the character further in a Creeper character subplot in Arkham Knight. This would have been the perfect opportunity for the series, as it would explain Ryder’s decision to stay in Gotham during Scarecrow’s takeover and would have given Ryder the empty streets to live freely as Creeper.
Despite the beloved character not making it into the series, it is still nice to see Creeper referenced in Batman: Arkham. The irreverent hero would have been an interesting sidekick to the Caped Crusader as he fought the Red Hood and Scarecrow. But perhaps his colorful get-up was considered too outlandish for a grounded take on the DC detective’s story.
